Kindergarten Self-Portraits

Kindergarten students viewed and discussed the self-portraits of Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo and discussed how the artist has shown her personality through her artwork. Students then created their own multi-media self-portraits using tempera paint, pastel and oil pastel. In the beginning, students observed their facial features in a mirror. They then chose a skin color and learned to use brush strokes to paint an oval shape for the head. After the tempera paint dried, students drew facial features, hair and clothing using oil pastel. In the final step, the background was colored in using pastel or oil pastel. The self-portraits were on display in the hallway outside of the kindergarten classrooms during June of 2014.
