Art Lessons Displayed
Kindergarten
Giraffe Paintings - Students viewed and discussed folk paintings of giraffes from Tanzania. They learned how to draw giraffes using line, shape, color and pattern. The background was painted using tempera paint. A frame was made of construction paper using either printmaking or drawing to create pattern.
Sunflower Paintings - The lesson began with a Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) discussion of the sunflower paintings of Vincent Van Gogh. Students used collage techniques to create the background and vase. Pattern was used decorate the vases. Sunflowers and stems were created using tempera paint and oil pastel.
First Grade
Lion Paintings - First grade students viewed and discussed lions in paintings by Edward Hicks and Albrecht Durer. They compared the similarities and differences in the two artworks. They then learned tempera painting techniques and created their own lion paintings. They used the art elements of line, shape, color and texture in their paintings. Symmetrical balance was also incorporated in these paintings.
Second Grade
Owl Collage - Second grade students viewed photographs of owls in their habitats. They used collage techniques to create their own owl collages. Torn paper was used to give the owls the texture of feathers.
Poison Dart Frogs - In the beginning of the lesson, students looked at photographs of poison dart frogs from the rainforest and discussed their colors and patterns. In their paintings, the children could choose to create a cool color frog on a warm color background, or a warm color frog on a cool color background. Students created pattern on their frogs by inventing their own shapes in black tempera paint.
Third Grade
Watercolor Whales - Third grade students discussed artwork depicting whales by the artists J.M.W. Turner and Rockwell Kent. They learned to draw whales in black crayon using the art elements of line and shape. The artworks were painted with watercolor paint incorporating the primary, secondary, tertiary and analogous colors.
Complementary Color Zebras - Folk paintings of zebras from Tanzania were the inspiration for this lesson. Students discussed the way that Tanzanian artists stylized depictions of zebras in their paintings. After learning how to draw zebras utilizing the art element of line, students colored their pictures using complementary colors. In the final step of the project, watercolor paint was added to the background.
Fourth Grade
Owl Print Collage - Fourth graders participated in a Visual Thinking Strategies discussion of a woodblock print, Owl in a Pine Tree, by the Japanese artist, Hiroshige. They created a printmaking plate depicting an owl on a styrofoam tray. From this tray they printed an edition of prints which were cut out and glued into a collage background showing the owl's habitat.
5th Grade
Animals of the Rainforest Biome Drawings - Part of the fifth grade science curriculum is learning about the biomes of the world. Students learned about the tropical rainforest biome by reading the story, The Great Kapok Tree, by Lynne Cherry. After reading the story and discussing the illustrations, students chose a rainforest animal and created a drawing of it utilizing pastel techniques.
