Here are the projects students are working on in October.
Grade 6 - Sun Designs
Objective: Students will be able to use the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design to create a sun design inspired by Northwest Coast Native American art.
Sixth grade students learned about the traditional carved wooden sun designs of the Native American people of the Northwest Coast of North America. They first created a symmetrical drawing with thickly applied crayon. The crayon drawing is then completely covered with black ink. When the ink is dried, texture is created with a scratching tool giving the appearance of wood.
Grade 5 - Animals of the Rain Forest Biome Pastel Drawing
Objective: Students will be able to use pastel drawing techniques to create a drawing of an animal of the tropical rainforest biome.
Fifth grade students listened to the story, The Great Kapok Tree, by Lynne Cherry. Then then chose an animal from the rainforest as the subject of their drawing. First, students draw the lines in oil crayon and then colors were filled in using pastel blending techniques.
Grade 4 - Middle Eastern Architecture
Objective: Students will be able to create an original work of architecture using the elements of art.
Students looked at and discussed photographs of the Taj Mahal in India. They also visited a website for a virtual tour of the Taj Mahal. Students then created their own original works of Middle Eastern architecture in oil pastel.
Grade 3 - Watercolor Whales
Objective: Students will be able to use the Elements of Art and watercolor technique to create a watercolor painting.
Students began by viewing and discussing paintings of whales by famous artists. They learned how to draw orca whales in black crayon. Currently, students are learning to mix watercolors to paint sea and mountains.
Grade 2 - Starry Night Watercolor Painting
Objective: Students will be able to create a watercolor resist painting using warm and cool colors and repetition of line and geometric shape.
Students are learning about warm and cool colors along with geometric shape and repetition by creating their own version of The Starry Night. The lesson began with students viewing and discussing The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh. They then drew stars and planets with oil pastels in warm colors. Cool color watercolor paints were applied for the background. In the final step, a horizon line, trees and houses will be added to the background.
Grade 1 - Landscape with Farm Animals
Objective: Students will be able to create a landscape painting of a farm using a horizon line, foreground and background.
Students viewed a painting of cows by Vincent Van Gogh and identified the horizon line, foreground and background. They then learned to draw cows using shapes and lines. Farm animals, barns and other details were incorporated into the picture. The details were then colored in crayon and painted over using watercolor paint.
Kindergarten - Pumpkins at Night
Objective: Students will be able to create a picture of a pumpkin using drawing, painting and cutting skills.
Students are learning to draw pumpkins and to mix the color orange from red and yellow paint. The pumpkin paintings will then be cut out and incorporated into a collage of a pumpkin at night. Students will draw details such as stars, moon and vines in their pictures.

Art in Ecosystems Tile Mural
Art in Ecosystems Tile Mural
During the 2016-2017 school year, fifth grade students worked together on a project called Art in Ecosystems Tile Mural.
This interdisciplinary project, connecting the art and science curriculums, was made possible by a grant from the Syracuse City School District Educational Foundation.
The project began with students choosing an ecosystem to research. Some of the ecosystems chosen were the rainforest, arctic, desert, coral reef, ocean and ponds and lakes. The research, conducted in the library, included learning about the animals and plants of the chosen ecosystem.
In art class, each student created a glazed tile of their ecosystem using ceramic techniques. The completed tiles were assembled into two murals, one showing Aquatic Ecosystems and the other Terrestrial Ecosystems.
The two murals were installed in the hallway of our school. Fifth graders attended an unveiling ceremony in June. Congratulations to the fifth grade class of 2017!

Art and Literacy Night - April 2017
In April, Salem Hyde presented Art and Literacy Night, featuring a show of student artwork and activities connected to English Language Arts. The artwork included, drawings, paintings, prints, ceramics and sculpture. Every student in grades K-6 had an artwork displayed in the show.
Art and Literacy Night was well attended by students and their families and Salem Hyde staff. A fun and educational time was had by all.

Salem Hyde Art Exhibition at Syracuse Silver Knights Indoor Soccer Game
On Friday, February 3, 2017 Salem Hyde students participated in an art exhibition at the War Memorial in Syracuse during the Syracuse Silver Knights vs Milwaukee Wave indoor soccer game. The exhibition, including drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture was on display in Memorial Hall.
Snowman puppets made by third and fourth graders as part of the Great Snowman Convention were included in the show. |
