Second grade students learned about the art elements of line, shape and texture through the creation of these owl collages. Students began the lesson by viewing and discussing the print,
Owl in Pine Tree, by Japanese artist
Ando Hiroshige.  Students also viewed photographs of different types of owls and discussed the texture of their feathers and how they use camouflage.  After drawing their owls using line, students used torn paper collage technique to create the texture of feathers.  Later, details such as eyes, beaks and talons were added using cut paper technique.
